Cyprus is a small country with a long history and a rich culture. It is not surprising that UNESCO included the Pafos antiquities, Choirokoitia and ten of the Byzantine period churches of Troodos in its list of World Heritage Sites.

It is an unfortunate reality that a large part of the island’s cultural heritage has since July 1974 been under Turkish occupation. This heritage has been subjected to severe damage. The occupation forces have been systematically trying to alter the demography and cultural identity of the area under their occupation.
